Rory Cannon

1996 Born in Nottinghamshire

Living and working between south Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire

Rory Cannon is an emerging artist., raised surrounded by stone masonry, with both his mother and father working in the field. This early exposure to the art form from both traditional and contemporary sources, has cemented itself in Rory's understanding and development as an artist. ‘Being able to work as an artist and engineer is one of the best gifts I could have been given through my alternative education in stone masonry’

Rory has worked with the simple, yet complex idea of ‘making the sculpture breathe’ bringing life into a stationary object, creating movement from the immoveable. For this, Rory has looked to the human form, developing abstract pieces from a classic material. Moulding both political and mythical elements into his work. Shaping rhythms and flows into each piece creating an irrefutable movement, almost dance, to his sculptor's marks. These rhythms and flows have the impact of creating a visible tension and drama, the impression of his pieces straining to escape their natural bonds.

Recently Rory has experimented with mixed media, combining classical and contemporary every day materials, to direct his audience towards questions and concepts close to his heart. Playing with the sharp contrast between street art and classical fine art, Rory has built upon this concept, creating unapologetic, defaced works with even stronger political and social messages.
